Feels like this needs to be said, since I see so, so many articles talking about how Microsoft recommends, if your computer can't upgrade to Windows 11, tossing it into the landfill after October 14, 2025. (Forbes: Microsoft Warns 240 Million Windows Users Stop Using Your PC)
First of all, Microsoft is being irresponsible by suggesting throwing away millions of computers in the landfill because they can't run Microsoft's own newest operating system. I get that capitalism dictates that they do not recognize any world view than their own, because of the cutthroat nature of it all, but come on, not making other suggestions for uses of perfectly good hardware is patently irresponsible.
Second, here's what you actually do with your Windows 10 laptop, desktop, or all-in-one machine...you install Ubuntu Desktop and don't look back. The ubiquitous Linux desktop has come a long way from its humble beginnings 30 years ago.
I've converted several older Macbook Airs, Macbook Pros, and an HP All-In-One to Ubuntu laptops or desktops. They're all "throw aways" by most standards, but running Ubuntu has gave them a new lease on life. Truly and honestly. My 2013 Macbook Pro is great Ubuntu-based web browser. My HP All-In-One that came home with me after a trip to the in-laws is one of the primary machines I'm writing my master's capstone project on.
As long as you don't need Windows compatibility, they work really, really well. And, frankly, Libre Office is a great substitute for Microsoft Office, if you just need basic capabilities from time to time.
